Helping Fishing Families
Newport Fishermen’s Wives tries to help local fishing families in need in the event of a loss at sea, and for some other reasons on a “case by case” basis when the family asks for help.
Update 4/25/2011
Baby Jax Johnson Family
Local fishing family still in need of help! Several local people donated last month to the Johnson family which helped them tremendously during this difficult time! Newport Fishermen’s Wives and the Johnsons are grateful for this support!
Baby Jax Johnson, born February 20th to Marti and Tim Johnson had two surgeries last week. The first biopsy, so doctors could find the nerve endings in his large intestine that did not attach as they should have which left him unable to process nutrition. The doctors did find the nerves at the beginning of his intestine, but because of where they are located they were not able to perform the surgery as scheduled to correct Jax’s colon. The doctors went back in the next day and performed and ileostomy to help with waste removal. Jax’s parents will need to maintain this as part of his daily routine until doctors think he can endure another surgery in 8 months when Jax is a little bigger and stronger.
In the meantime, the Johnson family still needs help with their living expenses. Tim is not fishing at the present time as the boat he works on is out of the water with maintenance and repairs. He hopes to go salmon fishing when the boat returns to water. The family is getting assistance with food and healthcare for Marti and Jax, but still needs help with rent and utilities. Donations can be made to Newport Fishermen’s Wives at PO Box 971, Newport OR 97365. Please put Johnson family in the memo of your check.
3/27/2011
Newport Fishermen’s Wives is asking for help to assist a local commercial fishing family in need of temporary help with living expenses after their son was born with a condition that hinders his ability to eat and digest. Donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to NFW PO Box 971, Newport, OR 97365 – please note the Johnson family in the memo or in a note.
Marti and Tim Johnson welcomed baby Jax on February 20th. Soon after, he was lifeflighted to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with Hirschsprungs disease. This is a disease in which nerves in his digestive system did not connect normally which prevents him from eating and processing nutrition. It will require at least one surgery, and possibly others to search out and reconstruct the nerves.
Mom, Marti was in the process of going to college online while working when she took maternity leave from her job for a few weeks. She is now unable to return to work or school at this time, due to baby Jax needs. Tim is a commercial fisherman in Newport and he is between fishing seasons without income.
