| The safety of commercial fishermen and commercial fishing vessels is of high importance to Newport Fishermen’s Wives. We strongly encourage all commercial fishermen to participate in USCG approved sea safety courses. Not only are these courses required for one person onboard each vessel, but they have decreased the number of fatalities in fishing vessel incidents. If you reside in Oregon, please contact, Kaety Hildenbrand, Oregon Sea Grant Extension Agent at (541) 574-6537 ext. 27. She can connect you to marine safety training in Oregon. Newport Fishermen’s Wives will also provide scholarships to fishermen residing in Lincoln County, Oregon, so that they can afford to take the course. If you reside in another state, please contact the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) at (907) 747-3287.
